Syllabus of chemistry -5

Addition of HX, Markonikov's rule addition of H20, HOX, H2SO4 with mechanism and addition of HBr in the presence of peroxide (anti-Markonikov's addition).  Oxidation (cis- additions) - hydroxylation by KMnO4, OsO4, trans addition - peracids (via epoxidation), hydroboration, ozonolysis - location of the double bond.  Dienes - Types of dienes, reactions of conjugated dienes - 1,2 and 1,4 addition of HBr to 1,3 - butadiene and Diels - Alder reaction. Physical properties: Acidity of terminal alkynes (formation of metal acetylides) preparation of higher alkynes, chemical reactivity - electrophilic addition of X2, HX, H20 (tautomerism), oxidation (formation ofenediol, 1,2 diones and carboxylic acids), and reduction  (Metal - ammonia reduction, catalytic hydrogenation).

Alicyclic Hydrocarbons: Nomenclature, preparation by Freund's method, Dickmann, heating dicarboxylic metal salts.  Proper- ties - reactivity of cyclopropane and cyclobutane by comparing with alkanes.  Stability of cycloalkanes -Baeyer strain theory, Sachse and Mohr predictions, and Pitzer strain theory.  Conformational structures of cyclopentane, cyclohexane.

(ii) What is Chelate effect? Explain in detail. 14. (a) (i) What is Gabriel phthalimide synthesis? Write the method of preparation of ethylamine by this method. 

(ii) How do you prepare furan and thiophene by Paul-Knorr synthesis?

(b) (i) How Cyanides and Isocyanides are prepared from Alkyl Halides? 

(ii) Compare the aromaticity and reactivity of Pyrrole, Furan and Thiophene.

15. (a) (i) Derive an equation for the rate constant of a second order reaction. 

(ii) Explain the collision theory of reaction rates.

(b) (i) Derive an equation for the rate constant of a first order reaction. 

(ii) What is half life of a reaction? Half life of a first order reaction is 100 minutes. Calculate its rate constant.

16. (a) (i) Explain Bathochromic shift and Hypsochromic shift with suitable exam 

(ii) What is quantum yield? Explain the reasons for high quantum yield of Photochemical reaction between H, and Cl, reacation.

(b) (i) Write a short note on different types of molecular spectroscopy. 

(ii) Explain the laws of photochemistry.
