1. They Shut Me up in Prose,
Emily Dickinson (1830-86) was one of the greatest and most original poets of all time. The themes of her poetry include death, immortality, and her reactions to the world around her. Dickinsons' poetry is marked with short lines, unusual punctuation, style of her own, and different from the then-contemporary poetry. "They shut me up in Prose" is a rebellious poem. It states that they try to make her only write in prose and it is as if they lock her inside a closet and they do not let her out. Nonetheless, by locking her up, they didn't quit her. She compares it to locking up a bird, but he has the will and becomes free.

The poet recalls the sweet smell of joss sticks from the prayer room, the spicy smell of seasonings from the kitchen. The different flavors from the kitchen increase appetite. The kitchen wakes up with the noise of churning butter and scrubbing of pots. The stove washed with mud, painted and decorated lies in the middle of the kitchen.
